You don’t want to miss Mariam’s story!

Dear Member,
We’re thrilled with your response to our new Empower Her Literacy campaign – so far over 500 of you have added your voice to take a stand for women’s education around the world. Thank you.   We believe everyone should have the opportunity to an education. Yet tragically, millions of women are missing out – due to conflict, gender inequality, poverty, and so much more. Education is more than books and exams, you need it in order to function in society. Without it you are denied this right, independence and respect.

Literacy changes lives.

That’s why I wanted to share Mariam’s story with you.

Five years ago, Mariam lost her husband, leaving her to raise three children alone. Life was difficult, but she held onto her faith and found a new family in Mothers’ Union.

Mariam joined a small literacy circle, learning to read and write—skills she had never had the opportunity to develop before. Soon, she became a facilitator, teaching others these essential skills. Literacy classes evolved to become savings groups, and the women could then start generating their own income.

‘I thank God as Mothers’ Union has helped me with many things. We see through this programme that MU is a good thing not just in this community but the whole country.’ – Mariam

Mariam has become a respected figure in her community – and she is just one of countless stories of how literacy can transform lives and communities.   We want to work with the UK government to ensure that women’s education in the Global South is a crucial part of their strategy.

If you haven’t done so already, would you take one minute to add your name to our campaign?

We know the incredible impact of educating women – and now we need to spread the word!
